Expressing myself through art is something I feel compelled to do. Landscape and the ever-changing beauty of nature, in all of its forms, inspires me. My art is aligned with the views expressed by Jack Shadbolt, “trying as I have tried all my life to reconcile nature with abstraction and deliberation with intuition” and like Angela Cunningham, “I am inspired by the seductive textures, elegant lines and fertile energy of flowers.”
I prefer to paint the beauty I see in nature in a personal and passionate way striving to maintain underlying abstract qualities and patterns in a realistic interpretation, agreeing with Henry Moore that “The best art contains a marriage of both abstract and realistic images.” The act of painting, of art, is a lifelong process of exploring, growing and developing a unique personal expression. The experience of travel has enriched my life and art. God has provided for us an endless source of inspiration in his creation. I look forward to the continuing journey.
Joyce was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. Her interest in art began early. Around the age of twelve she enrolled in her first oil painting class. Art was a major interest throughout Junior and Senior high school. Upon graduating from high school, Joyce moved to Calgary to pursue art at the Alberta College of Art (ACA) for the four year program. She graduated with a major in painting and was part of the ACA graduating show. One of her pieces was chosen for the public collection of Mackimmie Matthews law firm in Calgary and a large painting of Joyce’s was commissioned through a course at ACA for Petro-Canada’s art collection.
After graduation Joyce worked full time at the Rubaiyat Gallery enjoying creating jewelry displays & selling art objects, including glass, pottery & beautiful things. She then decided to pursue further education at the University of Calgary where she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, majoring in painting. After getting married, her husband’s job took them to Edmonton where their twin son and daughter were born. A year and a half later they were transferred to White Rock, B. C. where they resided for four and a half years. Several private commissions were completed during that time.
Joyce’s family moved back to Calgary in 1995 where she became an active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists. She participated in many of its shows locally as well as in the FCA Gallery in Vancouver. Her work is in many private collections. Joyce has taken workshops from artist’s Bill Duma, Brian Atyeo and more. For five years, beginning in 1996, Joyce participated in and sat on the board of directors of the annual ‘Colors from the Light Art Show’ and fund-raiser. In 2001 Joyce won the award for `Best Oil Painting’ of the show. As of August 2002 Joyce and her family are residing in Burlington, Ontario. Joyce is a member of the Art Gallery of Burlington (AGB). She enjoys volunteering in Art Etc, the AGB gift shop and art gallery. Joyce represented Art Etc on volunteer council for four years. She has been juried into the AGB Art Auction fundraiser for many years beginning in 2008. Joyce sells her work through the AGB, Gallery Shop and art rental program. Her paintings have been rented out to TV shows like Rookie Blue, Saving Hope, and others, for set design since 2014 to the present.
