A student of vivid colour and spatial contrast, Victoria completed her Honours BFA with Doug Morton during her graduating year at York University. After extensive travel, she turned her attention to painting large-scale murals in homes and public buildings. Victoria was absorbed by this work for 25 years, during which time she painted an enormous 4,600 sq. ft. ceiling to resemble a sky typically associated with the Renaissance period. Her dramatic skies have become her signature, inviting the viewer to consider the heavens and our place within it. Victoria has shown her work in numerous galleries in Canada and United States and exhibited in many group and solo shows. She teaches and paints in her studio in Hamilton‘s historic James North Neighborhood.

Each of Victoria’s surreal paintings begins with a line from a poem or prayer or an essential emotion, providing her a kind of mantra she uses to distill the healing energy that defines her process (Victoria is a Reiki Master). Both her floral and nest series attempt to use the subject as a metaphor for a struggling world. A bloom flies across the canvas thru an opening in the sky, hinting at freedom gained. A nest with a pocket watch and compass floats, un-anchored amid the clouds, hinting at the ongoing race to find one’s place.

In contrast, Victoria’s labyrinth landscapes use linear elements within shapes of water, rocks, trees, and sky to illustrate the continuous flow of all nature. Victoria’s recent work follows the journey of the spirit thru Haliburton, Muskoka, Madawaska Valley, Algonquin and the paths of the Bruce Trail. She is currently focused on the waterfalls of these regions. Her new Labyrinth Landscapes are explorations of the constant movement and inter-connectivity of all elements.  Intertwined lines fill shapes of fast-moving water, slow-moving rock and interconnecting trees all fit into the puzzle of her compositions. She plays complimentary and contrasting colours against dissimilar grounds to create movement and play within the canvas.

Victoria’s dramatic skies have become her signature, inviting the viewer to consider the heavens while pondering the wonders of a garden’s bounty. Flowers painted from the detailed perspective of the eye of an ant, provide a striking contrast to the clouds and sky that frame these unique still life images.

Born in Southern Ontario, Victoria has continued to study at the Haliburton School of Fine Arts and the Burlington Art Centre. She currently paints from her home in Oakville, where she lives with her husband and three children. Victoria is the current Vice-President of the Burlington Fine Arts Centre and President of the Burlington Arts Council. Her award-winning work is exhibited in Canada and the United States in juried, group and solo shows.
